Unfortunately, some audiences were not quite ready for their their new guitar hybrid sound or had moved on to the next (hair) fad. The Story of A Young Heart is a early evolution of A Flock of Seagulls sound and about where my Seagulls collection ends. The title track successfully blends the two styles and was the albums other hit (or near hit depending on which side of the Atlantic you’re on). This changed the band’s sound dramatically with tracks like “Remember David” sounding more like Modern English than Ultravox. Much of the change was due to the addition of guitar.
Ironically The Story of a Young Heart might be the band’s most uniform album in song quality, although with a few exceptions lacks a standout track. While the album itself only hovered close to the top 50, the band was never really able to capture the public imagination like they did just two years before on MTV. That song better than any other captured the slick synthesizer sound that made the band famous. European (I Wish I Was) sounds like an inverted Stand or Fall a huge MTV hit a year before.Įxternal influences and waning popularity did not stop the band from making their last stab at the charts in America with the wonderful “The More You Live the More You Love”. It’s easy to imagine the band being influenced by other acts like the Fixx.
The only problem was that the industry had moved on and in many cases presented new alternatives to their sound. The Story of a Young Heart presents A Flock of Seagulls as polished songwriters with solid melodies and synth rhythms. Producer Steve Lovell (Julian Cope, Frankie Goes to Hollywood) was up to the challenge with a brighter more upbeat sound augmented with guitars. To make matters worse Score’s limited vocal range meant that any exploration beyond the normal robotic chants of new wave territory would be met with limitations. That’s unfortunate, because a band who makes its mark as a novelty act faces an uphill battle for serious credibility. Almost as important as their innovative approach to bright synth pop, lead vocalist Mike Score’s distinctive space cow hair cut became the go to joke for crazy ’80s style. The trio’s third album saw their popularity crest as they had become a fixture on the pop charts for a few years. That was what happened to A Flock of Seagulls. First you blaze a trail with something unusual that stands out, then as time progresses and everyone catches up with or appropriates your style, you find yourself behind the curve. I suppose it happens to just about every band.
